In 1821 at Aghia Lavra monastery, priests, fighters and Hellenes congregated to strike the flint of rebellion against their oppressors.
On Monday December 13th 1943, church bells rang out repeatedly across the town. It was the ominous sound of 'Operation Kalavryta' commencing.
The name Kalavryta probably derives from the rich and numerous sources of water naturally occurring in the valley – vryses or vryta meaning ‘springs’.
