Village of Springs

Ododontos

A picturesque town, capital of the province of Achaia, sitting at an altitude of 750m in a valley near the Vouraikos river (also called the Kalavrytinos river).

Popular as a tourist destination, people are attracted by the beauty of the area, its' monasteries and history, and the superior skiing to be had on Mt Helmos. Outside of ski season, My Helmos offers stunning hiking trails and the experience to explore the 'Cave of Lakes'.

The name Kalavryta probably derives from the rich and numerous springs of the valley – vryses or vryta meaning ‘springs’ in Greek. Dating back to ancient times, Alyssos spring, near the railways station was renowned throughout Greek lands for its excellent water. Today it is called the ‘Kalavrytan spring’.

Odotonots – a 23km railway line, with a narrow gauge of only .75m, links the coastal town of Diakofto with Kalavrytra. The line operates at the most difficult places as a funicular railway and offers travellers superb views of the mountains of Northern Peloponnese. First opened in 1896, it is a link with the history of the region and provides a unique way to experience its beauty.
